This page explains what you get when you buy a Decorator Ops plugin, how many sites a license covers, and what you may and may not do with it. It expands on section 5 of our Terms of Service and forms part of them.

The short version

• The plugin code is GPLv2 or later, because building on WordPress requires it. We’re not going to pretend otherwise.
• What you’re paying for is the license key: automatic updates, new releases within the current major version, and support.
• One standard license = one production site, plus as many of your own staging, development and local copies of that site as you like.
• The license doesn’t expire. It isn’t a subscription and it won’t auto-renew.
• Agencies: you can hand a license over to your client permanently. Just tell us.

1. Two different things in one purchase

It helps to see a plugin purchase as two separate things bundled together.

1.1 The code — open source

Our plugins are built on WordPress and WooCommerce. The PHP portions of our plugins are licensed to you under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later — the same licence WordPress itself uses. A copy of the GPL is included with each plugin.

The GPL gives you real freedoms in that code: to run it for any purpose, to study and modify it, and to redistribute it under the same licence. Nothing on this page is intended to take away a right the GPL gives you in the code. If anything here appears to conflict with the GPL as it applies to the code, the GPL wins.

1.2 The license key — a commercial service

What you actually pay us for is not permission to run the software. It is the service attached to it:

• a license key that activates automatic updates inside your WordPress dashboard;
• access to new releases within the current major version, including fixes and compatibility work;
• support, as described in section 6 of the Terms of Service;
• access to your account download area and our documentation.

This service is provided under contract, not under the GPL. That is the part we can and do limit — and the limits are set out below.

Put plainly: you are free to copy the code. You are not free to copy the key.

2. What a standard license covers

2.1 One production site

A standard license entitles you to activate the license key on one production WooCommerce site — the live site your customers actually visit.

2.2 Your staging and development copies are free

You may also run the plugin, with the same key, on your own staging, development, testing and local copies of that same site, at no additional cost and with no limit on how many. These are copies used to build and test the licensed production site — not separate businesses.

We would rather you tested an update on staging than discovered a problem on your live store.

2.3 The current major version

A standard license covers the current major version of the plugin at the time of purchase, and every update released within it. A future major version may be offered as a paid upgrade. Where it is, we’ll say so clearly and we’ll normally offer existing license holders a better price than new customers.

2.4 The license does not expire

Our licenses are one-time purchases. There is no automatic annual renewal and no subscription to cancel. Your key keeps working for the major version you bought.

Where a product page states a limited period for support — for example “includes 30 days of basic setup support” — that period applies to support only. Your right to run the plugin and receive updates within that major version is not time-limited.

3. Multiple sites

3.1 More than one store

Each production site needs its own license. If you run three stores, you need three licenses.

3.2 WordPress multisite networks

A WordPress multisite network counts as one production site where every site in the network is owned and operated by you or your organisation.

Where a network hosts sites for third parties — clients, tenants, franchisees, separate businesses — each of those sites needs its own license.

3.3 Agencies and client work

If you build stores for clients, each client’s production site needs its own license. You are welcome to buy licenses on your clients’ behalf.

Your own agency staging and development environments for that client’s site are covered under section 2.2, so you don’t need extra licenses to build the site before it launches.

4. Moving and transferring a license

4.1 Moving to a different site

You may move a license from one production site to another — a rebuild, a domain change, a migration to a new host. Deactivate the key on the old site first, or ask us and we’ll reset it for you. There is no charge for this.

What you may not do is rotate a single key through a series of sites so that several live stores are running on one license.

4.2 Transferring to someone else

You may permanently transfer a license to another person or company — most commonly an agency handing a finished site to its client. Email us to complete the transfer so we can move the key to the new owner’s account and they can receive updates and support directly.

A transfer is permanent. You keep no rights in the transferred license, and a license may not be shared between the old and new owner.

5. What the license key does technically

To activate a license and deliver updates, the plugin contacts our servers and sends the information needed to answer that request — the license key, the site URL and domain, the requesting IP address, and the plugin, WordPress, WooCommerce and PHP versions in use.

We use this only to confirm a license is valid, serve the correct update, and enforce these License Terms. Our plugins do not transmit your orders, customer records, product catalogue or uploaded files to us. Those stay on your server. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.

6. Restrictions on the license key

You agree not to:

• share, publish, resell, rent or sublicense your license key;
• use one key to activate updates on more production sites than your license covers;
• circumvent, disable, patch out or otherwise tamper with license validation or update checks;
• use our name, logo, product names or branding in a way that suggests we authored, endorse or support a modified version;
• use the Products to build a substantially similar product that competes with ours, where doing so relies on our documentation, support or non-code materials rather than on the GPL-licensed code itself.

7. If you redistribute the code

The GPL permits redistribution and we’re not going to argue with it. But be clear about what does and doesn’t travel with the code:

• the code travels — under the GPL, with its licence intact;
• the license key does not;
• the recipient gets no updates from us, and no support relationship with us;
• our name and branding do not — see section 8.

If you distribute a modified version, please rename it. It keeps support requests pointed at whoever actually made the change.

8. What the GPL does not cover

The GPL applies to software code. It does not license, and we reserve all rights in:

• the Decorator Ops name, logo and product names;
• our website content, marketing copy, screenshots and images;
• our documentation.

9. Nulled and pirated copies

Copies of our plugins obtained from anyone other than us — “nulled” downloads, marketplace resales, forum uploads — carry no license key, receive no updates, and are not supported.

Beyond the licensing point, there is a practical one: nulled WordPress plugins are a well-documented malware vector, and running one on a store that processes customer orders and payment details is a genuinely bad idea. If you’re using one because our pricing doesn’t work for you, email us instead.

10. Suspension and termination

We may deactivate a license key and close the associated account if these License Terms are materially breached — in particular key sharing, exceeding the licensed site count, or tampering with license validation. Where the breach can be fixed, we’ll normally tell you and give you a chance to fix it before doing anything.

Deactivation ends your entitlement to updates and support. It does not revoke the rights the GPL grants you in code you already hold, and it does not stop the plugin you already installed from running.

11. No warranty

The GPL provides the software without warranty, and our Terms of Service set out the disclaimers and the limitation of our liability. Please read sections 12 and 13 there.

12. Changes to these License Terms

We may update this page as our products change. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. The License Terms in force on the date of your purchase govern that purchase — a later change never reduces the scope of a license you already bought.
